Dassel Area Historical Society

The Dassel History Center and Ergot Museum,
located in the Universal Laboratories
building at 901 1st Street in Dassel, is
operated by the Dassel Area Historical
Society (DAHS) in partnership with the
City of Dassel. This unique and
productive partnership has resulted in an
extraordinary facility and team.

The old Universal Laboratories building was donated to DAHS in 1993 and ownership was transferred to the City of Dassel. Work began on grant funding to clean and renovate the property, with the first duty to remove six inches of pigeon droppings from the floor! The building was restored to its present state through several construction cycles and grants. This transformation was only possible with funding from the Minnesota Historical Society Grants-in-Aid program, City of Dassel and DAHS members totaling about $500,000.

A modern annex completed in 2008 houses offices, meeting rooms, archival storage, kitchen, rest rooms and a welcoming lobby. It also boasts a large community room that is frequently rented for special events, receptions or meetings.

DAHS is also responsible for the Mushroom Building, a former
gas station and now famous Dassel landmark, at the corner of
Highway12 and County Road 4.

DAHS carries out its mission to Preserve the Past,
Enrich the Present and Secure the Future with these
wonderful spaces, enthusiastic staff and volunteers.
The Dassel History Center and Ergot Museum has
truly become the heart of the extended Dassel
community.
